Thoroughbred Charities of America
Awards $1,227,000 in Grants

Thoroughbred Charities of America (“TCA”) approved grants of $1,227,000 for the 2005 fiscal year at their annual board of directors meeting. The grants have been awarded to 112 equine charities in 33 states that provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue and research and by helping the people who work with them.

The $1,227,000 is believed to be the largest grant in the thoroughbred industry and for the fifth consecutive year TCA has approved grants surpassing the $1 million mark. TCA, known as a non-profit, “United Way” in the equine community, has issued more than $10 million in grants in its 16-year history of running their auction.

TCA focuses on support of horse rescue, retirement, medical research, therapeutic riding programs, scholarships and rehabilitation for people who work at the racetrack or on horse farms. The majority of the funds are generated at TCA's Auction and Gala dinner through the auction of donated stallion seasons, artwork, and memorabilia. This year's Auction and Gala will be held on Friday, December 1, 2006 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

“The $10 million in TCA grants was accomplished with the industry's support. Without the donations of stallion seasons to our auction, many of these ex-racehorse and backstretch organizations could not have survived.” said TCA president Herb Moelis. “This is a perfect example of an industry helping their own, using a “United Way” concept and we are most grateful to all the season owners, farm managers, artists and other donors who give so generously to our auction and made these grants possible.”

Ninety-three cents of every dollar raised is given directly to the charities, a phenomenal feat in itself for this low-expense charity. For more information call Liz Harris at 859-312-5531 or e-mail Liz@speedbeam.com
